When At-Home Skincare Isn’t Enough

With endless skincare products, online advice, and home remedies at our fingertips, it can be tempting to try to solve every skin concern on your own. And sometimes, that’s perfectly reasonable. Minor dryness, an occasional breakout, or mild irritation may improve with simple changes to your skincare routine.
But there are also times when continuing to experiment at home can delay the right diagnosis, make a condition worse, or simply leave you frustrated and spending money on products that aren’t addressing the real problem.
A dermatologist specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions involving the skin, hair, and nails. So how do you know when it’s time to stop self-treating and make an appointment?
Here are seven signs it may be time to see a dermatologist.
1. Your Acne Isn’t Improving or Is Starting to Scar
Drugstore acne treatments can be effective for some mild breakouts. But if you’ve been consistently treating your acne and aren’t seeing improvement, or you’re developing deep, painful blemishes, dark marks, or scars, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that deep, painful acne and acne that leaves scars often require professional treatment.
There isn’t one acne treatment that works for everyone. A dermatologist can determine what type of acne you have, identify factors that may be contributing to your breakouts, and recommend a treatment plan that may include prescription medications, topical treatments, professional procedures, or a combination of approaches.
2. A Rash Won’t Go Away or Keeps Coming Back
Rashes can be caused by everything from an allergic reaction or irritation to eczema, psoriasis, infection, or another underlying skin condition.
If a rash persists, repeatedly returns, spreads, becomes painful, or simply doesn’t respond to what you’ve tried at home, it’s time to have it evaluated.
Some rashes warrant more immediate medical attention, particularly those that spread rapidly, blister or develop open sores, occur along with fever or illness, or involve the eyes, lips, mouth, or genital area.
And if a rash is accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing or swelling of the eyes or lips, seek emergency medical care.
3. A Mole or Spot Is New, Changing, Itching, or Bleeding
You probably know many moles and freckles are completely harmless. The important thing is knowing what’s normal for your skin and paying attention when something changes.
The ABCDE warning signs can help identify a spot that deserves professional evaluation:
A – Asymmetry: One half looks different from the other
B – Border: Irregular, blurred, or poorly defined edges
C – Color: Multiple or changing colors
D – Diameter: Melanomas are often larger than 6 mm when diagnosed, although they can be smaller
E – Evolving: A spot that changes in size, shape, color, or appearance
A spot that looks different from your other spots, or one that changes, itches, or bleeds, should also be examined by a dermatologist.
4. You’re Constantly Battling Redness, Itching, or Irritation
If your skin always seems angry no matter what products you use, adding another serum or switching moisturizers may not be the answer.
Persistent redness, itching, scaling, burning, or sensitivity can be associated with conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and other skin disorders.
Some conditions can also look remarkably similar to one another, which is one reason getting an accurate diagnosis matters. Even persistent "acne" can sometimes turn out to be another condition entirely.
Once you know what you’re actually treating, you can stop guessing and start using products and medications appropriate for your skin.
5. You’re Noticing Unexplained Hair Loss or Changes to Your Scalp
Your dermatologist doesn’t just treat skin. Sudden shedding, thinning hair, bald patches, persistent scalp itching, scaling, or sores can have many possible causes. Some are temporary, while others benefit from early diagnosis and treatment.
Rather than spending months experimenting with supplements, shampoos, or viral remedies, a professional evaluation can help determine what may be happening and what treatment options are appropriate.
6. You Have a Skin Growth, Sore, or Spot That Won’t Heal
A pimple, cut, or irritated area should generally improve with time. A spot that repeatedly scabs, bleeds, heals and returns, or simply refuses to heal deserves attention.
Non-healing sores and persistent or changing growths can sometimes be signs of skin cancer and should be evaluated rather than treated indefinitely at home.
This is especially important here in Las Vegas, where years of intense sun exposure can add up.
7. You’ve Tried Everything and Still Don’t Know What’s Wrong
Sometimes this is the biggest sign of all. If your bathroom cabinet is filling up with products, you’ve tried every recommendation you can find online, and your skin still isn’t improving, you don’t necessarily need another product. You may need a diagnosis.
What looks like dry skin could be eczema. What looks like acne could be rosacea or perioral dermatitis. What you assume is a harmless dark spot may deserve a closer look.
A dermatologist can evaluate the bigger picture and develop a treatment plan specifically for your skin rather than relying on trial and error.
